a review of THE SONS OF DON JUAN in San Jose. I have now seen it 10 times and am finally
growing to like it. It was not as hilarious as ENTER THE GUARDSMAN, which I guess what I
was expecting. Before I start with details, I must say
that Bob Cuccioli seems to be very happy. It was fun meeting with him after the shows. He,
however does not have the funniest lines in the show. The honors there go to Coleman
who plays Fernandito who is around the night club where Robert, as Guille, sings on
weekends. The show takes place in the back of the night club, except when they sing on the
small stage. Fernandito and a character called Iggy (who really is hysterical) really have
ALL the truly funny lines and are excellent in their roles. I can't say enough about their
performances. The show is really campy!! What more can
I say. There is a main love interest for Robert, plus a dumb, appealing blonde who leads
his (Guille's) fan club. Everyone in the show is a character. Robert plays Guille, beauty
salon owner and weekend singer, Latin American/American entrepreneur (hopefully) and he
has some funny lines. However he is the glue that holds the production together. He is the
substance, presence and definitely the lead in the show. He is an appealing, macho character,
charisma at times, pouting at times, but at all times the center of the show. Gorgeous at
all times with his dark mustache and pulled back hair. The comedy with the other people
gets rather wild and frenetic, but Robert holds the line, by being funny at times,
poignant at times and beguiling. As he says, "I am the MAN here!!!!" He
definitely shows his stage experience in this show. It is a show with many twists, and ends
with a hysterically funny turn. All audiences have been very appreciative. I look
forward to seeing it again. As usual, Robert does a bang up job!!!!!! Incidentally, His
wardrobe is just great-even down to the shoes, everything matches-very varied and he looks
sensational in everything he wears." Barbara .M "The
'Sons of Don Juan' is billed as a spicy, sexy comedy. It is all that and
more!!!! It takes place at the stage and back room of the restaurant which Gillermo
dreams of owning. Bob, as Guille, sings here on weekends for his adoring fan club
following from the beauty shop. The songs and excerpts are sung by Bob in Spanish
with a piano accompaniment. His voice is sultry and seductive making his fan club
swoon. (The audience, too!) Bob
displays his outrageous comedic side as he did in 'Enter the Guardsman'. In
addition, he portrays Guille as a man who is macho and in charge one moment and vulnerable
and sensitive the next. The plot
allows for many twists and turns. All of the characters seem to grow and evolve
because of their interactions and relationships with one another. It is a talented
cast. Each one adds so much to the story and the audience's enjoyment of the play. For all
of you who will get to see 'Sons of Don Juan', we have left many of the details out.
We did not want to spoil your enjoyment the first time that you see it. We are
looking forward to returning in three weeks." Jan and Nancy
